Williams helps Kaskaskia College Win Triple OT Game

Centralia grad Whitney Williams did not realize how much she had accomplished until the game was over.

Everyone else in the arena was more than clear on what she had done, however. In KC’s 102-94 triple overtime win over Lincoln Trail College, Williamshit 7-of-18 field goals and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 16 points. She completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, adding six steals and four assists.

"Everything fell together that night," Williams said. "It was very satisfying to win a battle like that. At this point in the season, I am happy with everything except my free throws. I need to be stronger at the free-throw line."

The win over LTC was the last for KC. The team has lost its past four games and is now 16-13 overall and 7-9 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. ...

Southern Illinois University-Carbondale lost its third-consecutive game last week. Former Salem player Ellen Young, a SIUC Saluki freshman, finished with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals in the 71-61 SIUC loss. The Lady Salukis are 8-16 overall and 4-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference. ...

The McKendree University Lady Bearcats are very close to wrapping up the regular season title in the American Midwest Conference, sporting a 21-8 overall mark and a 13-1 record in league play.

Julie Garrison, a McKendree player and Centralia grad, had 15 points as McKendree dumped Hannibal-LaGrange College 72-55. Garrison drained 6-of-9 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, adding three rebounds and two blocked shots. McKendree has won its past 10 games. ...

Centralia graduate and Maryville University standout Samantha Maines scored 10 points in a 67-48 win over MacMurray College. Maines hit all six free throw opportunities and finished with five rebounds and two assists. In a 67-60 win over Webster University, Maines had six points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Maryville is 21-3 and 15-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. ...

Air Force Academy junior Kim Kreke, a Salem product, helped the Lady Falcons end the month of February and begin the month of March with a win. To open the third month of the year, Kreke popped for seven points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Lady Falcons topped Brigham Young University 54-49. She finished with four points, six rebounds and two assists in the 62-53 win over Colorado State University. Air Force is 10-16 overall and 4-10 in the Mountain West Conference. ...

Salem grad Shana Stein scored six points and grabbed three rebounds to help University of Illinois-Springfield win a 72-47 contest over Hannibal-LaGrange College. UIS is 12-18 overall and 6-8 in the AMC. ...

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Southern Illinois University-Carbondale blasted University of Northern Iowa (67-47) and University of Nevada (74-49) last week. Former Centralia player Matt Shaw, a SIUC Saluki senior, was in double figures in both contests. He bucketed 23 points by hitting 8-of-9 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws. He was also a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. In addition to leading the Salukis in points scored, he also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Shaw added 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals in the win over Nevada. The Salukis are 16-12 overall and 10-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. ...

Centralia grad Anthony Jones scored 13 points, but it was not enough to get by Quincy University. In the 74-72 overtime loss, Jones hit 5-of-9 field goals, which included a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc.

In SIUE's 70-58 win over University of Southern Indiana, Jones had eight points. SIUE is 14-10 overall and 7-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. ...

Andy Wolff, a Centralia resident and Metro East Lutheran grad, scored four points, doled out three assists and had two rebounds in McKendree's 60-47 win over Hannibal-LaGrange College. McKendree is 22-6 overall and 13-1 in the AMC. They lead the league by one game. ...

BASEBALL

Former Centralia High player Kyle Walker has posted a .340 batting average through the first 16 Coker College baseball games. Walker, who is the leading hitter among steady starters, has 18 hits (five doubles, three triples), 16 runs scored, nine RBIs, nine walks and six stolen bases.

In the most recent Coker College game, an 8-4 loss to Erskine College, Walker was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Coker is 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the Conference of the Carolinas. ...

McKendree junior Craig Session smacked a double as the Bearcats thumped Crighton College 13-1. Session, who also walked, drove home one run. McKendree is 2-4. ...

TRACK

Centralia grad Brad DeMattei, a Southeast Missouri State University senior, placed 13th in the mile run at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships. The former Orphan runner finished the race in 4-minutes, 32.26-seconds. Southeast Missouri State finished third with 117 points. Eastern Kentucky University (147) and Eastern Illinois University (129) finished in the top two teams. ...
